On the 14th of May of 1640, the regiments of King Don Felipe IV, whether with specific orders or with the unwritten consent of Don Dalmacio de Queralt, Count of Santa Coloma and Viceroy of unhappy memory, pillaged, set fire and destroyed up to more than thirty of the most important houses and farms of Santa Coloma de Farnés, and among them Mas Calicó (Calicó Farm). In this way ended one the oldest pagesies (peasantry), its existence established with documentary evidence dated back to 1281 when Raimundo de Calicó, son of Bernardo de Calicó -whose lineage is known to have been established in Santa Coloma back to 1184- was the Master of Mas Calicó. After the fire, being unable to recover Mas Calicó, the family moved and became part of the small town of Santa Coloma de Farnés. In 1745 Don Francisco de Calicó y Mullera, who then lived in Barcelona, returned to Santa Coloma de Farnés after inhering from his brother Don Jaime, who was Apostolic Notary and the eldest son of the family. In 1784 our fourth paternal grandfather Don José Calicó y Calvería, the youngest son of Don Francisco, moved to Barcelona and settled down in Plaza del Angel. From then on, and all the time inhabiting the building on the corner of Plaza del Angel and Calle Tapinería, our family's succession has always been from fathers to sons, dealing in different business. However, it was through our grandfather Don Javier Calicó y Bas, our father Don Fernando Calicó Rebull and our uncle Don Xavier Calicó Rebull that Numismatics -which at first was only a hobby of our great-grandfather Don José Calicó y Vives- became our full-time profession. During the 216 years elapsed, the appearance of Plaza del Angel has changed remarkably. Many others replaced the old houses demolished for improvements; a large avenue, Via Layetana, was laid out after many houses around Plaza del Angel were pulled down. It is only thanks to our forefathers' tenacity and hard work that the Calicó family has been able to keep living in the same house, coping with the urban circumstances every time that it has been necessary.
